Going Green
By Saving Energy

In 2005, Sysco began the Electrical Energy Use Reduction Program. In the past 12 months, it has saved 62,200,000 kilowatt hours which equates to a reduction of 96,400,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. This savings is enough to power 6,200 homes for a year (at 10,000 kilowatts per home per year). A hybrid straight truck is designed to improve fuel economy by more than 30 percent. Fifty-four trucks in Los Angeles, 12 trucks in Houston and seven trucks in Dallas have started to rely on liquefied natural gas. In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Defense, Sysco Grand Rapids and Sysco Detroit have started testing fuel cells that would replace batteries on pallet jacks. Sysco nationwide is re-evaluating tractor specifications for better fuel efficiency and reduced reliance on diesel fuel. Seven trucks in Austin and five trucks in Houston are currently recycling CO2 being used for refrigeration through a proprietary cryogenic process.
